Four Seasons Resort Hualalai- Kailua-Kona, HI

If you are ever so fortunate to get the chance to stay at the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai, I suggest you seize that opportunity. This is a truly luxurious resort where all your needs are taken care of, even the ones you didn’t know you had.

Rooms: The rooms are incredible and well appointed. The bed was so soft that I turned over and thought I was falling only to realize I was in the middle of the bed. Our lanai looked out over one (of the seven) pools and straight out to the ocean where we could see whales frolicking in the distance. Housekeeping services were provided twice a day and they would refill your ice bucket and replace your complimentary water bottles. The shower in the bathroom felt and sounded like rain. Our room felt very private and we could hear the ocean at night if we left the sliding doors open (using the screened doors instead).

Dining: Our first day we had both lunch (delicious poke and mahi mahi tacos) and dinner (a delectable pizza) as well as some tasty tropical beverages at the Beach Tree restaurant (see photo with umbrellas). The location is hard to beat with beautiful sunsets, live music, and yep you guessed it, more beachside whale watching. For most of the other days we had lunch poolside (poke and mai tais for the win!). Ulu is another wonderful restaurant at the resort that serves both breakfast and dinner. The breakfast buffet is outstanding and has everything from pastries, to made to order omelets, to fruit, malasadas (doughnut with Portuguese origins), eggs, bacon, and sausage and pretty much anything else you can think of. I had kalua pork eggs Benedict (among other things) and my husband said he had the best cold smoked salmon (lox) he has ever had. We also went to Ulu for dinner for our last night with a few other couples. The drinks and food (another version of the mai tai and bao buns pictured) were outstanding. We also partook of the tuna poke made table side, the grilled Kampachi, the spicy crab noodle, and the braised short rib. Incredible!

Pools: There are seven pools at this beautiful (and expansive) resort including an adult’s only pool with a swim up bar. However, we preferred the newly built infinity pool by Kings Pond. We found this pool to be less crowded and had no trouble finding seats or getting food and beverage service. We were also able to float around with our drinks on our inflatables that we brought (which they will inflate or deflate for you at their little beach shack outpost). Fun fact, they have people coming by offering you frozen grapes and popsicles (which I never passed up on) throughout the day; one of the staff even cleaned our sunglasses (what service!). I also wanted to take a minute to mention King’s Pond. It is a large pond that you can snorkel in with tons of colorful, tropical fish and an extremely cool 28 year old eagle ray that will glide right by you (or under you in my case). You can pick up snorkel gear right at the pool.

Spa: It would be a mistake for me to leave the spa out of this post. For one thing, I had my very first outside massage (a Hawaiian lomi lomi massage) there and it was amazing. In addition to that though, if you are staying at the resort you can use the spa facilities whenever you like (even without a service)! My routine was to wake up, go to the spa (while my husband used their fitness center facilities- also amazing), go to the steam room, then the sauna, then the plunge pool, and then close with a few minutes in the hot tub. These facilities are outside and it is an incredibly serene space (with lovely landscaping) where the loudest sounds you hear are the chirping of the birds. The last thing to share about the spa is that they have a tranquillity area with snacks and iced teas as well as a riverwalk filled with reflexology stones that feel delightful on the feet. Outstanding experience all around.
